Imagine yourself in this situation:
It’s late at night, and you’re away at college and safely tucked into your bed. Your pupils are fully dilated and your eyes are wired open. You have a strong desire to close your eyes, which is understandable given that your eyelids feel like they’ve been sprayed with cement.
Sleepiness is present, but no matter how hard you try to close your eyes, your lids will not lower. A gust of wind brushes past your cheek as your room door creaks open.
While some horror fans are so accustomed to the genre that nothing surprises them, watching a scary movie alone at home, especially at night or with the lights turned off, can be unsettling. Sometimes watching a horror film with friends who can laugh at a horror-comedy or discuss the meaning and characters in the film afterwards is the best way to enjoy it. We have made a list of movies that you would love to watch with your pg rooms roommates.
Top 6 Scary Movies to Watch with Your Roommates
1) The film Texas Chainsaw Massacre:
This movie is heavily associated with Urban Legend(s). What makes The Texas Chainsaw Massacre one of the scariest movies to watch with your college roommate is not the acting in this horror film, but rather the plot, which revolves around a group of college students (insert gasps) who are abducted and tortured by cannibals. The real scare factor, however, is the rumour that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was based on the true story of convicted slasher and body snatcher Edward “Ed” Gein. And, as we all know, nothing is more intriguing than the notion that Ed allegedly kept and frequently adorned himself with real pieces of his victims, such as keeping their skin to make a mask, as the fictional character Leatherface does in the film. While this isn’t the only horror film to be inspired by Gein’s twisted life, it is one of the most gruesome. And this film is important to the horror genre because it paved the way for several slasher horror films.
2) The Blair Witch Project:
The Blair Witch Project is an excellent film to watch with friends, both on and off campus, because it depicts what happens when school research takes a terrifying turn. While tuning in, your mind will be racing, imagining what it would be like if you and your friends were conducting research for a school project and went missing, leaving only the tapes you made along the way. Could you picture it? What would be the point of watching a horror film about university-related topics? Perhaps cliche, but genius nonetheless.
3) The Shining:
When director Stephen King and his wife allegedly stayed at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, they allegedly had the entire hotel to themselves. During their stay, he felt uneasy, which inspired him to write The Shining. In which, ironically, a “mad writer” develops supernatural abilities while staying at a haunted hotel.
4) The Grudge:
With this terrifying visual, you will repeatedly jump out of your seat. Can you imagine if your new apartment off campus from the university was haunted and housed the spirits of all the deceased people who lived there before you? And what if they harboured a grudge against you and nearly every other guest as a result? Worse yet, what if they took over your body? What would you do if you had the power to stop them?
5) The Rommate:
It is most likely to be the most cliche film on this list. Nonetheless, you must admit. This is one of the ultimate college horror movies because, let’s face it, there’s nothing more terrifying than knowing that the “roommate” you once loved is out for vengeance because your life took a different path. And when you decide to move out of your off-campus apartment and into a house near the university with your significant other, things go from bad to worse, especially when your former roommate’s obsession turns into a nightmare. Let us hope it isn’t déjà vu.
6) It:
Halloween wouldn’t be complete without including almost everyone’s most feared thing, clowns, in the list of films. Stephen King is fearless in his exploration of universal trauma in both children and adults. By creating a terrifying child predator clown who combines the fun and dancing of a traditional clown with the characteristics of a slasher-style rapist and serial killer—permanently scarring children and returning their parents to a fearful and childlike state of mind.
Warning: after seeing this Pennywise, you will have little faith in the student body president, who dresses up as a clown every year. So, if you’re not too busy this Halloween, grab some popcorn or your favourite snack. Turn off all of the lights, lock the doors, and relax on the couch with friends in your brand new off-campus apartment, courtesy of Tripalink, and watch all of the above horror movies.
