Bangkok isn’t a city that can be easily explored by just booking a Bangkok flight ticket. Most people only stay here for a few days before moving to the islands and the jungle. While you might not have to spend much time in Bangkok as a tourist, it is well worth the extra time most tourists give while booking plane tickets to Bangkok.

Bangkok Itinerary: Day One
The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun
Bangkok’s Grand Palace (Royal Palace) and Wat Pho are the two most important places to visit when you book airfare to Bangkok. These buildings house the famous reclining Buddha as well as a massage school. Although the Royal family does not live in the palace, it is only used for official state functions. You can’t enter any buildings, but exploring the grounds and open temples is worth exploring. It is beautiful, and the architecture is exquisite. Avoid the crowds by going early in the morning.
Afterwards, you can walk down the street to Wat Pho (along with the famous Golden Buddha). Although the Wat Pho complex takes up a block of space, it is easy to spend an hour exploring the maze-like grounds of the temples.
Then, cross the river to Wat Amun (Temple of the Dawn). From the top of the temple, you can see the entire city. Because of the amazing view, it’s my favorite temple!

Take River Cruise
A tour of the Chao Phraya River is a beautiful and relaxing experience that should not be missed when you book a cheap ticket to Bangkok. However, don’t pay too much for a tour while booking a ticket to Bangkok. Instead, look for better deals on airfare to Bangkok. A water taxi ride up and down the river costs around 20 baht (less than $1). You can start at the central pier and go all the way to the end before coming back. Presto! Instant tour! The difference between the official tourist boat and an instant tour is that some people give brief descriptions of important sites along the way.
Tour all the temples
Bangkok has a lot of beautiful temples. Hire a tuk-tuk driver to take you around for the day to see the temples. Just make sure he doesn’t take you shopping along the way — drivers get kickbacks if they bring customers into certain shops. They can be annoying about this but stay firm! This is often the cheapest and most efficient way to see the temples throughout Bangkok. My favorite temples are:
- Wat Saket – The Golden Mount has an enormous, 100m-high, 500m wide chedi (mound-like structure containing Buddhist relics). This is one of my favorite temples in the city because of its beautiful golden temple and wonderful views of the city from its top.
- Wat Benchamabophit – This temple is pictured on the back of the 5-baht coin. The white marble used to contrast the building was imported directly from Italy, with a unique blend of Thai and European architecture and design. In the courtyard, there are 53 Buddha images representing every mudra (gesture) and style from Thai history. This makes it a good place to visually see how Buddha has been described in Thailand over time.
Visit Khao San Road
This road in Bangkok, the backpacker capital of Thailand, is a must-see when booking a round trip to Bangkok! Many bars, shops, street food, and international restaurants are nearby. Locals and locals can be found all day. This is a popular spot for Thais on weekends. I prefer the quieter Soi Rajbuttri, but Khao San offers a great place to relax outside and meet other travelers. Brick Bar is a hidden Thai ska bar that only locals can access.

Check out the floating market
Half-day visits to the floating markets can be enjoyed around the city. The most popular are Khlong Lat Mayom and Taling Chan. This makes for an enjoyable morning adventure. If you arrive early, you can avoid the majority of the crowds. Thaling Chan is more touristy, so avoid the crowds of tour groups. Public transportation is available to both markets. My favorite things are the chaos, smells, and little women selling various treats to you as they pass you. You will never go hungry.
Explore Chinatown
Chinatown is Bangkok’s culinary mecca. While you can shop here and pick up many useless souvenirs from the shops, I love most about this area’s delicious food. You’ll find tons of food vendors along the streets lined with vendors. Although it is busy and crowded, this area is one of my favorite parts of the city. This area is a great place to find delicious seafood at night.
Visit the Bangkok Malls
Let me be clear: Bangkok’s malls are more than just shopping centers. Thanks to their air-conditioning, they are also social hubs, where people can eat at bars, watch movies, go to coffee shops, and even bowl! Each mall has its personality and is the hub of a lot of city life. Here is a list of the top malls in the city that you can visit when you book a Bangkok flight ticket.
- Terminal 21 – (88 Sukhumvit Road 19, +662 108 0888; terminal21.co.th). This is my favorite mall. The mall is airport themed, and each floor represents a different part of the globe. Free Wi-Fi is available on all floors. There are also restaurants on each floor. The top floor has a movie theater and the best mall food courts. You should stop by! - MBK Center – (44 Phayathai Road; +66 2 620 9000), mbk center.co.th). This is the best place to buy knockoff clothes, electronics, and movies. You will find various restaurants, tailors, and a movie theater on the top floor. Hours of operation: Everyday, 10am-10pm
- Siam Paragon – (991/1 Rama I Road; +66 2610 8000, siam paragon.co.th). Siam Paragon offers designer clothes and high-end shopping. There are also restaurants and a movie theater. Siam Ocean World aquarium, the largest in Southeast Asia, is located on the ground floor. It is a great family activity for those traveling with children. You will also find a large but slightly more expensive food court. Hours of operation: Every day, 10 am-10 pm
- Emporium – 622 Sukhumvit Road. +66 2 269 1000. emporium.co.th). This luxury shopping center has a large department store, multiplex cinemas, an English-language bookshop, fashion and trinket shops, and a grocery and food court. The owners also opened EmQuartier across the street. It features a gym, IMAX theater, incredible restaurants, and a roof garden overlooking the city. You should visit just for this! Hours of operation: Every day, 10 am-10 pm
- CentralWorld – (999/9 Rama I Road; +66 2 635 1111, central world.co.th). CentralWorld is the sixth largest shopping center in the world. The complex includes an office tower and a hotel. The Bangkok riots destroyed it in 2010, but it has been rebuilt. Although Western shops dominate the mall, there are many good restaurants and bars in this area. Hours of operation: Every day, 10 am-10 pm.
- Pantip Plaza – (604/3 Ratchathewi, +66 2 256 0355, bangkok.com/shopping-mall/pantipplaza) — This mall has all your computer and electronic needs (it’s where I buy all of my electronics). You can find both big-name shops and shops that sell used merchandise. Hours of operation: Every day, 10 am-9 pm
Watch Muay Thai Fight
Muay Thai, which involves striking and clinching, is very popular in Thailand. Thais take it seriously. Fighters train for many years. Do not bother going to the tourist Muay Thai fights. Spent a night at Rajadamnern Stadium in Bangkok to see a real match between world-class fighters.

Shop and eat at the Chatuchak Weekend Market
Bangkok’s weekend market is a must-see when booking a flight to Bangkok. It is the equivalent of many football fields and is very crowded. There are many things to choose from genuine designer clothes to fakes, phones to knockoff movies, pets, backpacks, and kitchenware. You’ll find great, affordable food in the large dining room. It would help if you didn’t miss this place.
Tour Jim Thompson’s House
Jim Thompson, an American spy and silk merchant living in Thailand in the ’50s and 60s, vanished in mysterious circumstances in 1967 while in Malaysia. His home was decorated in traditional Thai style with teak wood and a garden. You can find the best deals on Bangkok flight tickets and visit this amazing architecture. These tours provide a wealth of information about Jim and the silk industry and how and why Thais design homes in the way they do. Admission fees are donated to children in need.
Visit Lumpini Park
Lumpini Park is Bangkok’s Central Park. This sizable green space is worth visiting if you’re a people watcher. You’ll find people playing sports, walking, biking, practicing tai chi, or just relaxing all day hours. In a city that lacks much green space, you’ll probably crave a little wildlife after navigating all the traffic and vendors in this concrete jungle.
Hang with the Hipsters on Soi Nana
Two areas are called Soi Nana in Bangkok. One is a sex tourist hub, but I am referring to the Soi Nana as a new hip area for nightlife close to the Chinatown train station. In traditional Chinese homes, you will find small bars, cocktail lounges, and art displays. Pijiu (Chinese beer bars), Teens of Thailand (1st gin bar) and, Bai Hao (4-floor Chinese-inspired bars), El Chiringuito (2-course Spanish tapas) are some of the most popular bars. 23 Bar & Gallery is a bar within an art gallery. Enjoy an event at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center
The contemporary arts center showcases and hosts music, film, theater, design, art, and other cultural events in its exhibitions and performance spaces. This is a great place to find local art in a city lacking one. So, when you get cheap tickets to Bangkok, you should be.
Visit the National Museum
The museum is focused on Thai culture. Highlights include a large collection of musical instruments, recorded music, and ornate royal funeral cars. Although the museum isn’t large and the signs aren’t very detailed, the artifacts can be interesting to see. You can go on Wednesdays or Thursdays at 9:00 am for English tours.
Enjoy a Culinary Tour
Bangkok is all about food. Although you won’t be able to stop eating in Bangkok, the variety of food is amazing! Take a Thai food tour to get a better understanding of Thai cuisine.
