The ProSieben Snapchat Experiment – What you can learn from it

Times and miracles still happen. Exactly a week ago, I criticized the German social media landscape’s lack of openness to new social networks in this article , and ProSieben taught me better. Snapchat was used for the first time at the finale of the dance show Got To Dance. How exactly and what you can learn from it, I have summarized below.

The implementation

Two days before the grand finale, there was an announcement on the official website that the entire event would be followed on Snapchat for a day. Smart in terms of timing, so everyone who was interested had enough time to add the Snapchat account gottodance.de and were not caught off guard on the evening of the final.

All photos and videos of the day were summarized in the corresponding Snapchat story. (If you don’t know what to do with the terminology at this point, take a look at my Ultimate Snapchat Guide ).

Since showing works better than just writing about it, I filmed part of the story from my iPhone. The whole thing looked like this:

The content

What I find great in terms of content are all the authentic impressions and speeches. In a video, jury member Anton Zetterholm speaks, then you see the costume designer, then rehearsals again and you really don’t know what’s coming next. Everything seems a little staged, but more according to the motto: “Here’s your smartphone, tell me what you’re doing”. During the live show there were also videos and impressions from the hall or from behind the stage and the day rounded off with a final farewell. All in all very good storytelling.

Snapchat as the perfect companion

Of course, you could just as easily have commented on the day on Facebook and Twitter, but Snapchat is much better suited for that because of its features. In any other network, it would quickly have been perceived as spam due to its visibility, but with Snapchat everything is lined up in one long film strip.

Due to the transience – all individual snaps disappear again after 24 hours – everything seemed a bit more relaxed and not as posed and unrealistic as on Instagram, for example.

What you can learn from it

The Got To Dance Snapchat story is a small premiere in its form, as it is the first time a major media player in Germany has dared to rely on the app. Even though I don’t know the exact number of hits and my request hasn’t been answered so far, I see it as a success because it also serves as a great practical example.

Snapchat is the ideal way to accompany events and happenings in a very authentic way and give the fans / viewers much deeper insights. If you plan to use Public Profile Snapchat in the future, then inform your followers early on via the other social media channels, as the app is only slowly gaining ground in this country. In terms of content, you can do without big productions, people want to see candid impressions, regardless of whether they are pictures or videos.

Due to the transience, Snapchat is – in my eyes – more liberated. The statement of the 15-year-old in this article also fits in with this :

“If I want to see what my friends are actually doing, I will check Snapchat (because we can do things without getting caught on Snapchat).”

This “we can do things without getting caught” feeling describes it very well. And that’s where Snapchat’s great potential lies. In this sense: Don’t get caught!

Are you looking for interesting Snapchatters?

At this point I would like to introduce a small Snapchat project: Together with a friend, I launched snapgeist.com . On the site you can find interesting Snapchatters in a timely manner, nicely sorted by category and content. If you want to be there, just register quickly and painlessly on the site. We look forward to you!

When you’re done, press the arrow button on the bottom right to send your snap. Here you have the option again to save your snap in your Snapchat story. At the top you will find the users with whom you communicate the most on Snapchat. Below this, your other contacts are listed alphabetically. Select the desired people and press the arrow again to finally send your snap.

The Snapchat inbox

You will then be redirected to the overview page. The page is comparable to your e-mail inbox and there are numerous icons with the following meaning.

snapchat_icon

The red icon means someone sent you a photo snap. If it’s purple, a video is waiting for you. Blue means it’s a text message.

Press the speech bubble in the top right corner to open the chat and send a message to any user. Click the yellow button in the chat to send the person a photo.

Snapchat Stories

From the main menu, swipe right to go to Snapchat Stories. You can view any of your friends’ stories simply by pressing and holding on each friend’s circle. The stories remain available for 24 hours and then self-destruct. Appropriately, the circle decreases over time.

Current content from the Snapchat Discovery area is also highlighted at the top, which I will address in detail in the next point. Below you will find current live events that Snapchat created itself and summarizes the best snap contributions from users there as long image/video strips. In the last Berlin story, an 18-year-old became a coveted heartthrob overnight because his snap was viewed more than 10 million times. You can read the whole story here .

Snapchat wants to protect itself

The changes might sound scary at first, but — and I have to reiterate this — these are the “normal” rules that you accept, no matter what major social network you upload your content to.

Snapchat needs to safeguard itself with policies like this because, as I wrote in the previous paragraphs, there will be more and more Live Stories directly sponsored by companies in the future. Imagine if this safeguard didn’t exist and a large company shows your snap, which you SELF added to the sponsored live story, in an advertisement. Then, theoretically, anyone could sue the store. However, due to the new regulations, this is no longer possible.

Snapchat offers two types of communication. First the private one, similar to Whatsapp, when I send a photo directly to a friend. Then there are the Snapchat Stories. Here all the pictures and videos that I publish in my story within 24 hours are summarized as a long film strip. I can decide for myself whether the story can only be seen by my friends or the whole world.

Find other people on Snapchat

At this point I would like to introduce a small Snapchat project: Together with a friend, I launched snapgeist.com . On the site you can find interesting Snapchatters in a timely manner, nicely sorted by category and content. If you want to be there, just register quickly and painlessly on the site. We look forward to you!

Snapchat Discovery

Swipe right again and you will reach the Snapchat Discovery section, the newest Snapchat feature. Snapchat has partnered with companies like CNN, Cosmopolitan, Vice or ESPN that show exclusive Snapchat content on these dedicated channels.

To view the content, simply click on the respective company logo. Depending on the content, you can now swipe back and forth between photos, videos or articles from left to right.

summary

Snapchat is anything but intuitive, especially when you first start using it. This guide should therefore help you with orientation. The more you use the app, the faster you will understand and be able to use the full scope. I hope I was able to help you when you first get started :).
