Steroids, or cortisone, is a common form of chronic pain relief. This powerful drug pumps the body with enough adrenaline to cause you to coast through severe levels of pain. Steroids are also effective as a short term pain solution. It can be taken orally or via injection. 

Acetaminophen is often prescribed as relief from pain such as back pain and osteoarthritis, as well as headaches. This medication is considered one of the safer pain relief medication, as it does not cause side effects like bleeding and stomach pain. 

Antidepressants are available at various strengths, according to the severity of the chemical, hormonal or neurological imbalance it is treating. Opioids are largely prescribed for acute pain such as surgery or broken bones, or any other form of traumatic injury. They are designed to mimic endorphins within the body, a natural pain relieving chemical that dilutes the pain signals that the nervous system sends throughout the body. Research suggests that the body grows a tolerance for opioids, and therefore requires increased amounts of it to alleviate the same or greater amounts of pain. There is a great risk of addiction, and thus, abuse, through dependence on this medication.
