Effective Treatments for Ant Infestation

Ants are veracious little scavengers. They spend all day looking for food sources so they can expand their nest and increase their population size. After all, safety in numbers is their main form of protection. They aren’t scared to wonder into foreign environments or ones occupied by humans, even if it means losing a bunch of scouts and drones doing so.

“Knowing how to get rid of your ant problem is a little more complicated than picking up some spray at the supermarket. First you need to identify the type of ant you have,” said Paul, who works pest control in Melbourne, Florida. “You must identify the species of ant then buy the proper ant bait. Baits are the best way to treat this particular pest problem.”

Some ants require granular baits and they will totally ignore the sweet gels. For example, the big-headed ant is a very common ant in North America. This particular ant does not eat sugary foods. Black ants on the other hand will ignore the granular bait and go for the sweet stuff.

Besides big-headed ants and black ants, here are some of the ant species you will find in Florida:

  • Acrobat ants
  • Bigheaded ants
  • Harvester ants
  • Little yellow ants
  • Odorous house ants
  • Pavement ants
  • Twig ants
  • White footed ants
  • Velvet ants/Cow Killer Ants

The weather in Florida is perfect for ants and just about every other type of pest as well. It’s a warm climate with plenty of water and natural food sources. But ants will most certainly move into your yard at some point. They expand by sending out winged queen ants that will start their own colony. It’s nearly impossible to prevent this process from happening. But, you can eliminate the ant nest with the proper pest control treatments.
